POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
いせや三神
POKOTABIIseya Mikami serves onigiri filled with tea-seasoned rice, grilled cod roe and more, alongside sweet inari sushi. This unpretentious Japanese confectionery shop makes a tempting stop during a stroll around Shibamata.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
An onigiri picked up as a quick snack can turn into a meal before a visit to the shrine. At Iseya Mikami, the memorable pairing is tea-meshi—rice cooked with soy sauce—and inari sushi. The tea-meshi is gently seasoned, letting the flavour of the rice come through, while the inari is praised for the way its sweet-simmered fried tofu pairs with the rice. Try both to enjoy their distinct flavours.
Diners have also picked up onigiri with grilled cod roe, spicy cod roe and red-bean rice, among other fillings; some say the seasoning suited their taste. They have been described as small, making them a good choice if you would like to try a few.
Some visitors buy onigiri during a walk around Shibamata and eat them on a station bench or in a park. There are also accounts of pairing them with mame daifuku or mitarashi dango, so you can make it more of a meal or add something sweet. One report noted that the selection had dwindled by early afternoon, so it may be worth stopping by earlier if you have a particular onigiri in mind.
